울티마 시리즈의 7번째 작품이자 가디언 사가의 첫 번째 작품.
날씨의 표현 같은 당시로서는 충격적인 그래픽을 보여주며 높디 높은 컴퓨터 사양을 요구했다.
뛰어난 자유도로 충분히 명작 반열에 들만한 작품이지만 골수 울티마 팬들에게는 저평가 받는 작품.
이후 울티마 온라인의 개발에 모티브가 된 작품이다.

전작 '검은 문'에서 스토리는 이어진다. 대화창과 페이퍼돌 시스템의 개선은 실로 놀라웠지만, 전작의 최대 장점이었던 자유도가 떨어져 비판을 받았다.
